Chapter 5

Project

2/26

CONGRATULATIONS! You just bought your first hovercraft.  This machine can hover up to 6 feet above ground.  You and a few friends want to take a trip to test it out! First you need to know how long of a distance your test trip will be so you can make sure you have enough fuel.  Also, since this is a hovercraft you do not want to use roads, because who needs a road with a hovercraft?!?! Follow the steps below to complete your project.  Write all work and answers to each step on a piece of paper (this will be turned in for your grade). Everyone will have the same answer for #1.

1. You will be starting at Eureka (pink star on map above).

2. Choose a city along route 24 (pink line on the map above).  (example: Fairbury)

3. From there go straight up the map to find another town. (example:Odell)

4. Make a sketch of the triangle your towns create.

5. Look up the distance between Eureka and the answer to #2 Also look up the distance between the answer to #2 and the answer to #3.  (these are the legs of your triangle)

6. Use the pythagorean theorem to find the straight-line distance from Eureka to your answer in #3.

7.  Your hovercraft gets 31 miles per gallon.  If gas costs $2.12 per gallon, how much will it cost to hover from Eureka to your city in #3 and back?

8. You want to go on a hover trip, now that you have gone for a test drive and decided to buy this hover craft.  If you are to travel from eureka to Chicago (only one way) to watch a Bulls basektball game. figure out how much it would cost you in gas money. (The Bulls play at the United Center ;) in case you didn't know)
